Pastel is a new medium for me, though I have used coloured pencil for many years, it is slightly different and I am still exploring the wonderful properties that it has. It is great for punchy use of light and shade to create delightful dramatic images. I have organised my pastels in re-used plastic trays, into shadows, pales and browns to help me find the colour that I need more quickly. These Shire horse foals have the most wonderful fluffy ears, though it is being lost from the very tips showing a shorter more adult coat underneath.
It was the relationship between these foals that inspired me, as well as the lovely, dramatic backlighting which highlights them in a very striking way. Such a lovely touching painting.
